Home Away From Home
After a nice Thanksgiving Long weekend, our eager crew met early Tuesday morning, ready to kick off our clean up.
Their home base for the next few months will be Blind Channel Resort, located on West Thurlow Island in the Discovery Islands (roughly 1 hour from Campbell River by boat). Blind Channel has been gracious enough to host our crew during the cleanup project, and we couldn't be happier!
Site Orientation and Safety Training
After getting settled in our accommodations, they took a short boat ride to the barge, which is anchored in Beaver Inlet. The barge is essentially our floating "office", there is a bathroom, a crane truck (for lifting the heavy garbage off of the boat), and 3 large C-Cans which will be used for sorting the garbage, and cleaning any styrofoam.
The crew went through a safety training session, along with an orientation about the project logistics and what each day will look like. That took up the majority of the first day but they did manage to get a small section of beach cleaned up!
They dove right into it for the rest of the week, covering roughly 40km of coastline, and collecting roughly 1000lbs of garbage!
