Boating Around Whales
Whales Don’t Know the Rules. If a whale gets too close, here’s what you need to know:
- Do turn off the engines and raise them up.
- Do observe and wait for the whale to move out of the area.
- Do observe whale direction and remain within required distances.
- Do Not in front or behind a whale.
- Do Not motor up to a resting whale.
Orcas are a highly protected species. For the most up to date information about viewing distances, visit Transport Canada Orca Info Page here
If You See a Whale..
- Slow down to 7 knots within a 1000-meter radius
- Come no closer than 400-metres (orca) or 100-metres (all other whales)
- Do not cross the path in front of or behind
